Adelaide Geurtsen-Shoemate

President

I'm a junior at La Jolla High School, a beach lover, and President of San Diego Youth for Clean Oceans. When I was younger, I began to learn about the pollution coming from the Tijuana River. I knew that it was unsafe to swim in the ocean after rain, but beyond that knowledge, I was unaware of the gravity of this situation. Within the last few years, I have learned more about wastewater pollution and the problems it causes with residents of San Diego. With this project, we can help fix the issue and make our coast cleaner for everyone.

Bijou Gonzalez

Vice President

I’m a junior at La Jolla High School and the Vice President of San Diego Youth for Clean Oceans. I've always had a love for the beach and a strong desire to protect our coastline. Growing up, I was always aware of the pollution issues in our ocean stemming from the Tijuana River. It wasn’t until more recently that I fully understood how serious this issue was for our health and safety. Through this project, I’m determined to help reduce wastewater pollution and create a cleaner, safer environment for everyone to enjoy.

Annika Odom-Velez

I'm a junior at La Jolla High School and the Secretary of San Diego Youth for Clean Oceans. As a beach lover and I've always been involved with the Ocean, I became aware recently of the local pollution issues caused by the Tijuana River. Learning about these issues I became interested in wastewater pollution and its impact on the San Diego community. Our group aims to work together to address these challenges, trying to make the coastlines cleaner and safer for everyone.

Elisa Vidal Henríquez

Treasurer

I’m a junior at La Jolla High School and Treasurer of San Diego Youth for Clean Oceans. The beach has always been an integral part of my summers. As I grew older I looked closer at our beaches and noticed the pollution in the ocean. After doing some individual research I've realized that wastewater pollution is a problem for San Diego that needs solving. With our organization we can help solve this issue facing our community.

Sophia Wagner-Sprinkle

President of Brentwood College Chapter

I was born and raised in San Diego and now attend school in British Columbia, Canada. The ocean has always been a massive part of my life. Whether on the icey beaches in Tofino or the warm water and hot sand in San Diego, I can’t help but have a deep love, respect, and gratitude for the ocean and its incredible ecosystem. The thought of a place that has been a home to so many people and creatures being a biohazard is depressing. With our organization, we can make the oceans clean and better for generations of organisms; humans and fish alike.
